Whole-Body Math for Educators

WORKSHOPS | COACHING | ON-SITE
Whole-body math professional learning workshops are offered as 3- or 6-hour sessions (but Malke is happy to discuss more comprehensive options). The workshops are a mix of hands-on experience with the core lessons of Math in Your Feet and other scaled-up math activities, but also address the teaching and learning that happens in a moving math classroom.  As a part of each session participants observe and unpack student work.

Educator workshops are for classroom teachers of grades 3-6, PE and music specialists, and home educators. K-2 and 6-8 teachers will find the material adaptable for the younger and older grades.

Learn how to: use simple foot-based dance patterns to orient students in space; apply problem solving strategies to the choreographic process;  challenge students to learn and apply principles of transformation and symmetry to dance patterns; infuse your classroom with math vocabulary used in context; help students communicate their creative work using written reflections, word studies, graphs, symbols, and maps.

The mathematical content of all activities was developed in collaboration with  award-winning math education specialist Jane Cooney.  In recent years, the content and pedagogy of Math in Your Feet has been significantly deepened through productive collaborations between Malke and her Teaching Artist Journal colleagues, as well as Dr. Maria Droujkova and Dr. Christopher Danielson, both leading math education thinkers and educators.

"Malke was phenomenal. I’m very excited to take this workshop and use it in my classroom." -Elementary Teacher
"Within five minutes of participating in a workshop [Malke] led for interdisciplinary arts teachers, I was inspired and curious about the mathematical ideas that were surfacing in our work ... my participation in [the] workshop changed the way I think about teaching symmetry with my future elementary teachers. Malke's work gave me a way to structure the study of transformations and symmetry that grounds my students’ learning in their physical experience and in words that meaningfully describe that experience."
-Dr. Christopher Danielson, Author of Talking Math with Your Kids and Common Core Math for Parents for Dummies

"Malke was a dynamic teacher, demonstrating useful formative assessment and constructive feedback, and leading conversations that helped build content and connections as well as the classroom community." -Dr. John Golden Associate Professor of Mathematics Grand Valley State University

"Malke did a wonderful job combining concepts, math vocabulary, and practical ideas for using it in the classroom."
- Elementary Teacher
"The three hours flew by."
- Elementary Teacher
"I wanted to let you know that Math in Your Feet is in full force in the fifth grade at Weston.  The kids LOVE it!!!  Thank you so much for introducing this to us." - Elementary Teacher
